Pupil dilation happens when the black centre of the eye becomes larger, and it is an automatic response controlled by the nervous system. Psychology shows that pupils dilate when we are emotionally aroused, interested, or attracted to someone. This reaction is not a choice and happens before we are even aware of it.
Science explains this through the autonomic nervous system, which reacts to excitement, attraction, or heightened attention. When we see someone we are drawn to, the brain releases chemicals like dopamine and adrenaline. These signals tell the eyes to take in more visual information, which causes the pupils to widen and can make the eyes appear brighter or more intense.
Studies have found that people subconsciously notice pupil dilation and often perceive it as warmth, interest, or attraction. This is why phrases like “sparkle in the eyes” exist, even though no actual shapes appear. Pupil dilation is one of the quiet ways the body reveals emotional and romantic interest without words.
